Bornstein: "Debate and Say to My Face What You Say in Your Ad"
PALM DESERT, CA, – Democratic Congressional nominee Julie Bornstein (CA-45) called on incumbent Mary Bono Mack to have the courage to meet in person and "look me in the eye and repeat the sleazy lies in your television ad. Your new ad is exactly what our citizens do not want or need during a national crisis – more dirty politics from the partisan Republican playbook."
Mack launched a misleading television advertisement last night accusing Bornstein of profiting from the current financial meltdown, a charge which is completely contradicted by publicly disclosed documents.
The ad attempts to link small donations to an affordable housing advocacy nonprofit made by the Fannie Mae Foundation and Freddie Mac, to Bornstein´s personal finances. The two organizations actually provided only around 10% of the annual budget of the Campaign for Affordable Housing (CAH), of which Bornstein was an employee.
Mary Bono Mack´s ad is simply a lie from a politician willing to do anything to keep her job," said Bornstein. "It is inexcusable – people here want to hear how we are going to help fix this crisis. Our people are desperate for answers, but Representative Mack just seems desperate for re-election."
Prior to heading the CAH, Bornstein had a leadership role in the creation of over 3,600 units of affordable housing for working families and seniors in the 45th Congressional District, and over 120,000 units across California.
The advertisement´s hypocrisy is magnified by Mack´s own Congressional financial disclosure, which shows she held between $111,000-$315,000 in Fannie Mae notes and bonds, as well as tens of thousands of dollars of stock and other assets in banks likely to profit under the government bailout.
Bornstein´s campaign manager Walter Ludwig said "Mary Bono Mack clearly has seen polling that shows she has lost the confidence of the voters and will lose this election. Her campaign advisors are Richard Nixon´s former dirty trickster and Jim Battin, one of the nastiest campaigners in California history, and now Mack is clearly singing from their sheet music. Voters already knew that she has no ideas, no answers and no desire to speak to them. Now they know that at the end of her political career, she has no class either."
