Millions worldwide march peacefully to end bigotry and discrimination.
The narrow passage of California Proposition 8, the same-sex marriage ban, has led to world-wide protests demanding an end to intolerance and unfairness against lesbians and gays. During Saturday´s "National Day of Protest" hundreds of thousands of Americans took to the streets in major cities across the United States. The protestors carried home-made signs, banners, and American flags while others held hands and chanted slogans demanding equality.
In May, the California Supreme Court ruled that banning same-sex marriages was unconstitutional. Since June 16 – the date the ruling took effect – over 18,000 same-sex couples have been married in the state. Co...

Garamendi Supports Committee Motion Curtailing Freshmen Enrollment at UC Campuses Unless State Approves Adequate Funding.
San Francisco – Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi, a University of California Regent, who argued the escalating UC tuition fees are making the public university system cost as much as Stanford, today urged the UC Regents not to factor in a $662 a year tuition increase when they take action on the budget to send to the California State Legislature.
At their board meeting today, UC Regents Committee on Finance voted to curtail freshmen enrollment in 2009-2010 unless the Legislature includes a $815 million increase in revenue to keep classes from being cut so students can graduate in four years, ...

The Actors' Gang puts the "X" in Xmas December 6 to January 10.
CULVER CITY, CA - The Actors' Gang puts the "X" in Xmas with Aah! Scrooge Must Die!, a rambunctious and very raunchy retelling of Dickens' beloved classic tale. Performances take place Saturday, December 6 through January 10 at The Actors' Gang in the Ivy Substation at 9070 Venice Blvd. in downtown Culver City.
Written by company member Angela Berliner who also directs, Aah! Scrooge Must Die! is raucous, crazy, fast and funny in The Actors' Gang signature style that incorporates aspects of commedia, physical comedy, song and dance.

Analyzing employment discrimination complaints filed with state agencies in states prohibiting sexual orientation discrimination, the study finds 5 out of 10,000 LGBT people in the workforce file sexual orientation employment discrimination complaints each year, compa...

SACRAMENTO -- Equality California has called on leaders of the Yes on 8 campaign to end their attacks on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for saying he believes Proposition 8 should be overturned. Prop 8 eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry in California.
In an interview with CNN earlier this week, the Governor said he hopes supporters of equal rights never give up in their quest for full equality, including the freedom to marry. He also said the California Supreme Court should repeal the measure, which passed with slim majority support.
"The claim that our governor advocates anarchy simply because he supports the repeal of Prop 8 is not only absurd, it's offensive," said EQCA Executive Director Geoff Kors. "Just as they did du...

UC Berkeley Department of Public Science Chairman Emeritus Eugene C. Lee: "Specific changes to the California constitution may be proposed by amendment. Substantial changes may be proposed by a constitutional convention or by the legislature as constitutional revisions."
With the misinformed and discriminatory vote under question by county governments and marriage equality advocates, many Californians are wondering whether they've lost the right to amend or revise the constitution. The answer is no, according to the constitution itself and the legislative and legal history regarding the difference between an "amendment" and a "revision." However, since California Proposition 8 is a "revision" to the constitution, Proposition 8 w...

The seed germinated in the late 1980´s, when my wife´s 30-1 shot blew up the tote board at California´s Los Alamitos Race Course, Quarter Horse racing´s Churchill Downs.
Speechless, I just stared enviously when she triumphantly waved her winning ticket--in my face, of course.
"30-1!" she proudly exclaimed. "Ka….ching! I´m rich! Jealous…?"
"Why´d you bet that horse?" I asked.
"I liked the name." She laughed mischievously, then suddenly bolted down the second-floor bleachers—to pocket $62 for a measly $2 bet.
Alone in the grandstands, I made some speedy calculations. In blackjack (which always had my number), most payoffs are even money: a winning $5 bet returns $10 from ...

For all of us, life is granted. The freedom to choose how we are to live, however, is not. Government regulations define many aspects of our lives: from the restrictions on abortions to same-sex marriage, from gun laws to the right to protest.
In 1960, it was illegal in 16 states for interracial couples to marry, supposedly violating the sanctity of marriage. Slaves were not allowed to marry, for they were property, and hate crimes were yet to be illegalized.
Today, the nation is taking a stand. Means of Equality, an online organization is trying to do what our forefathers intended for us to do so many years ago: Form a more perfect union.
This divide, that conquers us all, only tears down the walls that are built to protec...

A peaceful march of over 5,000 protesters blanketed the streets of Long Beach last night to protest Proposition 8, the anti-gay-marriage initiative that was principally funded by Mormons living outside California.
The protesters carried American flags, No on 8 signs, and placards with the words, "equal rights" and "No on H8." Proposition 8 is the first time discrimination has been etched into the California constitution. Supporters of the amendment say Prop 8 should prohibit the recognition of marriages of same-sex couples, including the marriages of over 18,000 couples that have already been performed in California.
As the protesters marched down Broadway, business owners, residents, and supporters cheered and applauded to indicate...
